Sugar Check

Best Protein Bars for Kids (2026)

Most protein bars are built for adult lifters: 20g of protein, sucralose, and sugar alcohols that can upset a small stomach. For kids, we flipped the filters. Every bar here has 5 to 15g of protein, 3g or less added sugar (Tier A to C), and none of sucralose, acesulfame potassium, aspartame, saccharin, or sugar alcohols such as maltitol, sorbitol, erythritol, or xylitol.

TL;DR

Kids rarely need a protein bar to hit their protein target. Use one as a portable snack on busy days, not a daily supplement. Bars with stevia, monk fruit, or allulose may appear; those sweeteners are flagged on each product page.

What the research says

These sources inform our editorial criteria. They do not replace advice from your child’s pediatrician or registered dietitian.

  1. 1

Protein RDAs are 13g per day for ages 1 to 3, 19g for ages 4 to 8, and 34g for ages 9 to 13.

    National Academies Dietary Reference Intakes
  2. 2

Common questions

Are protein bars safe for kids?

Most are fine as an occasional snack. The concerns are the sweeteners and the dose. Sugar alcohols such as sorbitol carry an FDA-required laxative warning at high intake, and small bodies hit that threshold sooner. Adult bars with 20g+ protein are more than a snack needs.

How much protein should a kids' snack have?

About 3 to 8g is plenty. The RDA is 13g a day for ages 1 to 3, 19g for ages 4 to 8, and 34g for ages 9 to 13, and most of that comes from meals.

Why exclude sugar alcohols and artificial sweeteners?

Sugar alcohols can cause gas, bloating, and loose stools, especially in kids. Pediatric nutrition groups also recommend children avoid non-sugar sweeteners. We let stevia, monk fruit, and allulose through but flag them so you can decide.

What is the difference between a protein bar and a granola bar?

Granola bars are mostly oats and sweetener with 2 to 4g protein. Protein bars add nuts, egg white, dairy, or soy protein to reach 5g or more. For the lowest-sugar granola bars, see our granola bar list.

Are date-based bars too sugary?

Dates add natural sugar, so total sugar can reach 12 to 15g even with 0g added. That is fruit sugar with fiber, which is a better trade than added sugar, but it is still sweet. Check total sugar if your kid is small.
