Instant Oatmeal Packets Ranked by Sugar: What's Really in Your Kid's Bowl

Plain Quaker instant oatmeal has 0g added sugar. Maple & Brown Sugar has 12g per packet. Dinosaur Eggs has 11g. Here's the full ranking and how to sweeten plain oats yourself.

Oatmeal has a healthy reputation, and plain oats earn it. A packet of plain Quaker instant oatmeal has 0 grams of added sugar. The flavored packets are different. Maple & Brown Sugar has 12 grams of added sugar per packet. Dinosaur Eggs, the one made for kids, has 11 grams of sugar.

That makes a flavored packet about as sweet as a bowl of many kids’ cereals. Here’s how the common packets rank, and how to get the same taste with a fraction of the sugar.

Instant Oatmeal Packets Ranked

Numbers are per packet, from Quaker and the USDA Branded Foods database as of October 2026. Packet sizes differ, so look at both columns.

Packet Packet size Sugar Fiber Notes
Quaker Original (plain) 28g 0g added 3g Just whole grain oats
Quaker Protein No Added Sugar Apples & Cinnamon varies 0g added check label Newer line, check sweeteners
Quaker Lower Sugar Maple & Brown Sugar 34g 4g added 3g Uses sugar plus monk fruit extract
Quaker Dinosaur Eggs Brown Sugar 50g 11g total 3g Candy “eggs” melt into dinosaur shapes
Quaker Maple & Brown Sugar 43g 12g added 3g The most popular flavor

Quaker’s own comparison, scaled to a 55g basis, puts regular Maple & Brown Sugar at 16g of sugar and Lower Sugar Maple & Brown Sugar at 7g.

All five packets have about the same fiber. The oats are the same. The only real difference is how much sugar goes on top of them.

Why Dinosaur Eggs Deserves a Closer Look

Dinosaur Eggs is the instant oatmeal most kids ask for by name. The “eggs” are small candy shells made from sugar, dextrose and palm kernel oil. In hot water they melt and reveal little dinosaur shapes.

It’s fun. It’s also 11 grams of sugar in a 50g packet, and the candy pieces are listed before most of the other ingredients. For a child aged 2 to 18, the American Heart Association recommends less than 25 grams of added sugar a day. One Dinosaur Eggs packet uses close to half of that.

If it’s a weekend treat, that’s fine. As a daily breakfast, it’s closer to a frosted cereal than to oatmeal.

Is “Lower Sugar” Good Enough?

Quaker Lower Sugar Maple & Brown Sugar has 4g of added sugar per 34g packet. That’s a real improvement over 12g. It gets there partly by using monk fruit extract, a non-sugar sweetener.

On our scale, 4g is still Tier D. That’s not bad. But plain oatmeal with your own toppings will almost always come in lower, and you control what goes in.

If your child likes the lower sugar packets, they’re a good stepping stone. Mix one lower sugar packet with one plain packet and the bowl drops to about 2g.

How Oatmeal Compares to School Rules

USDA now limits added sugar in breakfast cereals served in school meals to 6 grams per dry ounce. That works out to about 9g for a 43g packet. Regular Maple & Brown Sugar, at 12g, is above that line. The plain and lower sugar packets are well under it.

Sweetening Plain Oatmeal Yourself

Plain instant oatmeal tastes like plain oats. Most kids want something on it. These add flavor with little or no added sugar:

Add-in Added sugar Why it works
½ mashed banana 0g Sweet, creamy, adds potassium
¼ cup frozen berries, stirred in hot 0g Melts into a “jam” swirl
Cinnamon and a drop of vanilla 0g Tastes sweet without being sweet
1 tbsp peanut or sunflower butter 0g Adds protein and staying power
1 tsp brown sugar about 4g Still a third of a flavored packet
1 tsp maple syrup about 4g Let your child pour it from a measured spoon

Even a teaspoon of brown sugar on plain oats is about 4g of added sugar. That’s a third of what’s in a Maple & Brown Sugar packet. The taste is close, and kids feel in charge when they sprinkle it themselves.

Packets vs. Rolled Oats

Instant oats are rolled thinner and cut smaller, so they cook in a minute. Nutritionally, plain instant and plain rolled oats are very similar. The packets just add convenience.

The thing to watch with instant oatmeal isn’t the oats. It’s the flavor packet. FDA counts every sugar, syrup and honey added during processing on the Added Sugars line, so that line is the fastest way to compare.

The Bottom Line

Plain instant oatmeal is one of the best low-sugar breakfasts you can buy. Flavored packets turn it into something closer to dessert. Buy the plain box, and keep a shaker of cinnamon and a bag of frozen berries next to it.
