Common questions

How much sugar should kids' cereal have?

The Environmental Working Group recommends no more than 6g total sugar per serving for kids' cereal. We use 3g added sugar (Tier C) as our threshold, which is stricter.

What about whole grain claims?

"Made with whole grain" doesn't mean low sugar - many whole-grain cereals still have 10g+ added sugar. Check the added sugar line, not the front-of-pack.

Is oatmeal better than cereal?

Plain rolled oats are Tier A - zero sugar. But flavored instant oatmeal packets can have as much sugar as cereal. Check the label.

What fiber content should I look for?

Look for at least 3g fiber per serving - that's a "good source of fiber" by FDA standards. High-fiber cereals help kids feel full and support digestion.

Are these cereals fortified?

Most are. We show iron, calcium, and vitamin D on the product page where the data is available.
